Medical Records Management Glossary

Hi, my name is Léa and next semester I would like to study in the Medical Records Management program. My glossary is for people who would also like to join the Medical Records Management program and would like to familiarize with some words, so it could be easier for them when they start the program. This glossary contains 20 words with their definition, what part of speech is the word, a pronunciation, a translation, an example of sentence with the word and an image. I found the words and definition by looking on the web and learn more about the Medical Records Management program. After consulting my glossary I would like you to feel free to use it whenever you need :).

appendicitis

noun

A serious medical condition in which the appendix becomes inflamed and painful.

Example: Frequency of appendicitis rises among adults.

laparoscopy

A surgical procedure in which a fiber-optic instrument is inserted through the abdominal wall to view the organs in the abdomen or to permit a surgical procedure.

Example: She went through lengthy hospital tests including a laparoscopy.

thrombosis

noun

Thrombosis occurs when blood clots block your blood vessels. There are 2 main types of thrombosis: Venous thrombosis is when the blood clot blocks a vein and arterial thrombosis is when the blood clot blocks an artery.

Example: I have just been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis and the medication I am taking makes my asthma worse.

cardiomyopathy

Any disorder that affects the heart muscle is called a cardiomyopathy. Cardiomyopathy causes the heart to lose its ability to pump blood well. In some cases, the heart rhythm also becomes disturbed.

Example: One case of both spontaneous cardiomyopathy and heart amyloidosis were reported in female mice.

meningitis

Meningitis is an inflammation (swelling) of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. A bacterial or viral infection of the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord usually causes the swelling.

Example: There was a child who just died on the Garden Hill Reserve from meningitis and his family had no running water in the facility.

tendinitis

Tendinitis is inflammation or irritation of a tendon — the thick fibrous cords that attach muscle to bone. The condition causes pain and tenderness just outside a joint.

Example: I have developed a tendinitis located on my right elbow due to a repetitive movement at work.

arthroplasty

Arthroplasty is a surgical procedure to restore the function of a joint. A joint can be restored by resurfacing the bones. An artificial joint (called a prosthesis) may also be used.

Example: Investigation reveals a fracture of the neck of the right femur, and a hip arthroplasty is performed via posterior approach.

The science of the causes and effects of diseases, especially the branch of medicine that deals with the laboratory examination of samples of body tissue for diagnostic or forensic purposes.

bypass surgery

Bypass surgery is a procedure that restores blood flow to your heart muscle by diverting the flow of blood around a section of a blocked artery in your heart.

Example: These subjects also had a higher likelihood of bypass surgery or other revascularization procedure in the longer run.

Periodontitis is a severe gum infection that can lead to tooth loss and other serious health complications.

Example: Periodontitis damages the alveolar bone that holds teeth in the jaw.

A bacterial disease typically affecting cattle and buffalo and causing undulant fever in humans.

Example: In Slovenia, ovine or caprine brucellosis has been compulsorily notifiable for at least five years.

campylobacteriosis

Campylobacteriosis is an infection that causes diarrhea (loose stool/poop) and is the most common cause of bacterial diarrhea in New York State. The majority of cases are seen in the summer months and occur as single cases.

Example: Drinking unpasteurized milk appears to be a risk factor for campylobacteriosis.

cryptosporidiosis

Cryptosporidiosis is a disease that causes watery diarrhea. It is caused by microscopic germs—parasites called Cryptosporidium.

Example: Many waterborne illnesses are diarrheal diseases, including cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis.

malaria

Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal disease caused by a parasite that commonly infects a certain type of mosquito which feeds on humans. People who get malaria are typically very sick with high fevers, shaking chills, and flu-like illness.

Example: The prevention of climate change is therefore also the fight against malaria.

sarcoidosis

Sarcoidosis is a rare disease caused by inflammation. It usually occurs in the lungs and lymph nodes, but it can occur in almost any organ. Sarcoidosis in the lungs is called pulmonary sarcoidosis. It causes small lumps of inflammatory cells in the lungs.

Example: Sarcoidosis is a common chronic disease and does not normally result in lasting harm to tissues.

lead poisoning

Lead poisoning occurs when lead builds up in the body, often over months or years. Even small amounts of lead can cause serious health problems. Children younger than 6 years are especially vulnerable to lead poisoning, which can severely affect mental and physical development.

Example: In January, another little boy died there as the latest, 27th victim of lead poisoning.

whooping cough

Whooping cough is a highly contagious respiratory tract infection. In many people, it's marked by a severe hacking cough followed by a high-pitched intake of breath that sounds like "whoop.".

Example: Almond oil is also valuable in treating whooping cough.

diphtheria

Diphtheria is an acute febrile contagious disease typically marked by the formation of a false membrane especially in the throat and caused by a gram-positive bacterium that produces a toxin causing inflammation of the heart and nervous system.

Example: Diseases such as, tuberculosis, diphtheria, measles and epidemic paratyphoid are widespread.

kleptomania

Kleptomania is a persistent neurotic impulse to steal especially without economic motive.

Example: If someone is born with kleptomania tendencies or homicidal tendencies, should we then be tolerant enough to allow them to steal or to kill?

Hypertrichosis is defined as excessive hair growth anywhere on the body in either males or females.

Example: Hypertrichosis is often due to a family or ethnic character exists before puberty.
